Dementia 13

Here's a classic oldie I found myself watching the other day and thought I'd throw up here whilst I was at it - Dementia 13! Written and directed by Francis Ford Coppola before he became famous and overrated - and its better than most of his stuff since too ;P

In 1963 the god of B movies himself, Roger Corman, offered then unknown Coppola the chance to direct what would be his first legitimate feature length movie (Coppola had worked on some nudie flicks previously) - a low-budget horror movie in Ireland with funds left over from Corman's recently completed The Young Racers, on which Coppola had worked as a sound technician. The producer wanted a cheap Psycho-copy, complete with gothic atmosphere and brutal killings, and Coppola quickly wrote a screenplay in accordance with Corman's requirements. Although he was given total directorial freedom during production, Coppola found himself fighting with Corman after the film was completed. The producer declared the movie unreleasable and demanded several changes be made. Corman eventually brought in another director, Jack Hill, to film additional sequences.

How my mind imagines it...

"You said there would be plenty of sex and violence and you give me this art school BS? This is unreleasable! I want more axe murders and I want them now!! To hell if it fits in the script anywhere, just kill someone, now! Do you know who I am? I'm Roger F***ing Corman! That does it, you're outta here. Get Jack Hill on the horn, he'll do it how I tell him to..."

Plot: John Haloran has a fatal heart attack, but his wife Louise won't get any of the inheritance when Lady Haloran dies if John is dead. Louise forges a letter from John to convince the rest of his family he's been called to New York on important business, and goes to his Irish ancestral home, Castle Haloran, to meet the family and look for a way to ensure a cut of the loot. Seven years earlier John's sister Kathleen was drowned in the pond, and the Halorans enact a morbid ritual in remembrance. Secrets shroud the sister's demise, there is an axe murderer on the loose, and most of the family and guests are not exactly operating on all cylinders (i.e. a bunch of raving nutjobs! ;)
