H-Minus 13 - Deadtime Stories

As it is now, so it was then... For everthing good there is an evil thing And with every happy-ending, so a tale of horror begins...


Inspired by traditional fairy tales, this trio of gruesome and darkly-comic vignettes is framed by the story of a lethargic uncle who can't seem to alleviate his bratty young nephew's fear of the dark and get him to go to sleep, trying his hand at telling a few warped versions of his favorite bedtime tales.

Uncle Mike: Once upon a time, there was a little girl named "Rachel." Actually, she wasn't all that little. She was a hot-looking high school senior with deep blue eyes, and fine, firm breasts and...
Little Brian: That's not the way Mommy tells it!
Uncle Mike: Shut up, that's the way I tell it.

The first installment, "Peter and the Witches," tells the story of a young fisherman (Scott Valentine of "Family Ties" fame) enslaved by two shape-shifting witches who are trying to bring their sister back to life; he later rebels against his masters after falling in love with the virgin they've captured as a sacrifice.

The goofy second chapter involves "Little Red Running Hood" -- a somewhat shapelier modern version of the classic heroine -- whose jog to Granny's house leads to a showdown with a pill-popping weirdo whose anti-werewolf remedy got switched with Granny's prescription.

Still unable to satisfy the demanding tyke, the exhausted uncle pulls out all the stops for the final tale, in which the Three Baers, a family of murderous crackers, encounter the telekinetic Goldi Lox, a malevolent cutie who shares the Baers' penchant for death and dismemberment.

This 1932 Bela Lugosi classic is a must see during the Halloween season.

Young couple Madeleine (Madge Bellamy) and Neil (John Harron) are coaxed by acquaintance Monsieur Beaumont (Robert Frazer) to get married on his Haitian plantation. Beaumont's motives are purely selfish as he makes every attempt to convince the beautiful young girl to run away with him. For help Beaumont turns to the devious Legendre (Bela Lugosi), a man who runs his mill by mind controlling people he has turned into zombies. After Beaumont uses Legendre's zombie potion on Madeleine, he is dissatisfied with her emotionless being and wants her to be changed back. Legendre has no intention of doing this and he drugs Beaumont as well to add to his zombie collection. Meanwhile, grieving 'widower' Neil is convinced by a local priest (Joseph Cawthorn) that Madeleine may still be alive and he seeks her out.

H-Minus 26 - Manos The Hands of Fate

Manos The Hands of Fate (1966) written, directed, and produced by Harold P. Warren is often said to be the worst film ever made, which is of 'course highly debatable particularly since half of the big budget schlock and mindless re-makes Hollywood is dishing out these days is actually far worse, but I digress... the fact remains it is bad - real bad. Harold Warren was a fertilizer salesman from El Paso, Texas who produced the film as a result of a bet. He also starred in it, alongside El Paso theater actors Tom Neyman and John Reynolds.

Upon its debut, Manos was poorly received and lay in obscurity ever since until in 1993, Mystery Science Theater 3000 gave it the old heckling treatment in what is widely said to be one of their best episodes ever.

The plot of the film revolves around a vacationing family who lose their way in the wastelands of El Paso on a road trip. After a long drive in the Texas desert, the family stops for help at a lodge where they meet the creepy satyr Torgo, who says he takes care of the place while "The Master" is away. As night falls, the family is menaced by "The Master", resplendent in his spiffy cape no less, and by his multiple wives. As it turns out, they maintain a pagan cult that worships the evil deity known as Manos! The family must then try to escape as the cult's members try to decide what to do with them. Will they succeed? Watch and find out! (oh the suspense is killing me... ;)

Here I present both the original and MST3K versions - if you are, like me, the sort of person who truly loves B horror and sci-fi movies that are sooo bad they are good, you can probably take watching the original although its more of the so bad its actually really bad sort. Its worth watching just to help set the bar of badness by which other bad films can be judged ;) The MST3K version, on the other hand, is a scream that all can enjoy - it is preceded by the second half of the short Chevrolet training film "Hired!" which the MST3K crew had to finish watching first.

The Sadist

Three teachers driving into LA for a ball game have car trouble and pull off into an old wrecking yard where they are held at bay by a bloodthirsty psycho and his crazy girlfriend. This critically acclaimed but little known film plays out in real time and is loosely based on 50's thrill killer Charles Starkweather, with cult actor/singer Arch Hall, Jr. (Eegah, Wild Guitar, The Choppers) in the title role and (Hall's Eegah! co-star) Marilyn Manning as his girlfriend. Cinematography by Vilmos Zsigmond (Deliverance, The Deer Hunter, Close Encounters of the Third Kind) in his first American film.

A photographer and his models go to an old, abandoned castle to shoot covers for horror novels. The castle turns out to be inhabited by a lunatic who believes himself to be the reincarnated spirit of a 17th-century executioner.
