In 1906, in China, Professor Alexander Saxton (Christopher Lee) discovers an ancient frozen fossil in the remote Province of Szechuan. He brings the remains of the being in a box to Shanghai and boards a trans-Siberian train, where he meets his acquaintance Dr. Wells (Peter Cushing). During the trip, a life force trapped in the frozen creature is released, killing and stealing the memories of the passengers.

Horror Express (1972)

H-Minus 14 - The Pod People

Los Nuevos Extraterrestres aka The Pod People is a 1983 Spanish science fiction film originally intended as a low-budget horror movie about an evil alien. However, after the success of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), the producers demanded script changes, making the alien into a lovable character, and adding a kid who befriends it. Director Juan Piquer Simón was not satisfied with the final result. The film was largely forgotten until 1991, when it was lampooned by everyone's favorite movie-mocking television show: Mystery Science Theater 3000.

The film starts with three poachers preparing to enter the woods in search of game. One of the hunters sees something in the sky that he thinks is a meteor and goes to investigate. He finds a stash of large eggs in a red glowing cave and begins smashing them. An unseen entity finds and kills the poacher, but not before he smashes all but one of the eggs. the mystery creature begins to take revenge, first on the hunters and then on members of a rock band that is camping in the mountains for the weekend.

Tommy (Óscar Martín), a boy who lives in a secluded house with his mother Molly (Concha Cuetos) and uncle Bill (Manuel Pereiro), also finds the cave and the remaining intact egg and brings it home, where it shortly hatches and grows rapidly until by the next day it is as large as Tommy. Tommy nicknames him "Trumpy", presumably due to the alien's short, elephant-like trunk, and they become playmates. As the dangerous mother alien continues looking for her child, the rock band seeks out Tommy's house for medical care after one of their group, Laura (a female "friend" and apparent groupie of the lead singer Rick), is struck from ambush by the alien mother and falls off of a short cliff.

The film features the fictional pop band's performance of "Burning Rubber Tires", which was lampooned on MST3K for its unintelligible lyrics, specifically the chorus, "hear the engines roll now", which was interpreted by the MST3K cast as "hideous control now", "idiot control now" and other variations. The lead singer's after-song gesture of making the A-OK sign, smiling, and saying, "It stinks" became a recurring in-joke on MST3K.

H-Minus 16 - Hobgoblins

After Gremlins we were deluged with a torrent of little creature movies. A lot of them were pretty good and went on to have their own well established series of sequels - like say Critters. Then, on the other hand, in 1988 there was perhaps the cheesiest of them all: Hobgoblins which kinda went nowhere until MST3K picked it up for one of their better shows making fun of it. The hobgobs had no sequel - well that is until THIS YEAR! That's right, inspired as much by the MST3K version as by Hobgoblins itself, the director has returned 20 years later to make Hobgoblins 2! Oh the horror!

So without further yak-yak-yaking about things.. here's the hilarious MST3K version of Hobgoblins, followed by the 1st interview by the cast in 20 years where they tell you what they think of the movie, the MST3K version, and Hobgoblins 2 - and then a trailer for the modern day sequel itself ;)

H-Minus 25 - Night of the Blood Beast

Night of the Blood Beast, was a 1958 film produced by Roger Corman with the story by Gene Corman (yup, its double Corman time! - so you should know about what to expect here), with Bernard L. Kowalski directing.

The film stars:

Angela Greene (who was one of Jack Kennedy's girlfriends during the early 40's for those of you who like a little pointless political trivia with your B movies),
Ed Nelson,
Georgianna Carter (who happened to be Jack Nicholson's very first love interest... hmmm... Blood Beast Babes seem to be a turn on for famous people named Jack ;) ),
Michael Emmet,
Tyler McVey and
Ross Sturlin as "The Creature" (who would later reprise his role in the very same creature costume when it showed up again in the film Teenage Cave Man (1958)).

The plot, which the film only seems at times to be mildly interested in sticking to, is something like this:


An astronaut returns from space dead (maybe).


The base that recovered him is then cut off from the outside world by an alien.






The revival of the dead astronaut (ok he wasn't dead then?), the death of a scientist (ok that dude is dead for sure, I think), and the discovery of alien embryos inside the resurrected astronaut's body (ah ok, he wasn't dead, just pregnant!) bodes ill for the survival of those trapped at the base and the rest of humanity.

Wood film or such - everything about it from the acting to the dialog to the fake fight scenes screams B movie schlock but in a uniquely amusing way. A must see!
